Pawel Herczynski, the European Union ambassador to Georgia, on Tuesday said the country’s aspirations to obtain the bloc’s membership candidate status by the end of this year is a “historic opportunity”.
In his Europe Day video message recorded in Georgian, the ambassador said the country had met the day with a European perspective, which he said was a “great success”.
“The next stage is to obtain a candidate status that will bring Georgia even closer to EU membership. This goal is supported by the vast majority of the population. This is a historic opportunity to become a member of an united, safe and economically strong European family”, said the diplomat.
The EU and its member states celebrate Europe Day on May 9. Georgia also marks the Victory Day on the day, commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945.
