The European Union has expressed serious concerns over the Georgian parliamentary elections held on October 26, urging Georgian authorities to address electoral irregularities and rebuild trust in the democratic process. In a joint statement issued by EU High Representative Josep Borrell and the European Commission, the EU stressed the importance of adherence to democratic standards amid reports of procedural inconsistencies, voter intimidation, and a divisive campaign atmosphere.
The statement reads that according to initial findings from the International Election Observation Mission led by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), election day proceeded in an orderly manner but was marked by a tense environment with compromised voter secrecy, procedural irregularities, and extensive voter tracking. Concerns over undue pressure on public sector employees also raised questions about the ability of Georgian citizens to vote freely without fear of reprisal.
“We call on the Central Election Commission of Georgia and other relevant authorities to fulfill their duty to swiftly, transparently and independently investigate and adjudicate electoral irregularities and allegations thereof. Those irregularities must be clarified and addressed. That is a necessary step to re-building trust in the electoral process,” the statement reads.
Additionally, the EU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Georgia’s democratic journey, encouraging “constructive and inclusive dialogue across the political spectrum” to foster unity.
