In a few hours, the foreign ministers of European Union member states will convene to address Georgia’s recent elections, which opposition leader Tina Bokuchava has described as “hijacked” and “totally falsified.”
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Bokuchava stated that the EU’s position remained resolute – “while standing by the Georgian people, the Union does not recognize the government formed through what she called rigged elections”.
“I am in Brussels to meet with EU foreign ministers, who will discuss how the European Union can continue its relations with Georgia while firmly maintaining its stance on non-recognition of the government elected through fraud,” said Bokuchava. “The European Union stands strongly on this policy, and our goal is to keep this non-recognition intact, alongside pushing for an international investigative mission under EU auspices to assess the extent of election fraud.”
Bokuchava emphasized that only after such a mission would the EU consider calling for re-elections and ensure that a fair, independent electoral process is conducted. She also stressed that these steps are crucial for Georgia’s path toward EU integration. “This is the only way Georgia can return to the process of joining the European Union,” she added.
