EU High Representative expresses concern over arrests in Georgia

The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, on Monday voiced concern over the recent arrests in Georgia during pro-European protests.

Speaking to media in Brussels, Kallas emphasized the EU’s unease over the detentions.

“We are very concerned about the arrests, I mean the arrests of people,” Kallas said, responding to a question about the situation in Georgia and demonstrations sparked by the Georgian Dream Government’s decision last year to halt EU integration until 2028.

She also highlighted that pressure was being applied to those responsible for violence against peaceful demonstrators.

“We are putting pressure on those who are actually using violence against peaceful protesters,” Kallas noted.

The statement comes amid ongoing tensions in Georgia, where protests and reports of police actions against demonstrators have drawn international attention. The EU has repeatedly called for respect for democratic principles and fundamental rights, including the right to peaceful assembly.
