EU High Representative: No grounds for lifting sanctions against Russia

The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has stated that there are currently no grounds for lifting sanctions against Russia, emphasizing that sanctions remain a vital leverage tool.

“We absolutely need sanctions. They are our leverage, and it would be very unusual to give them up,” Kallas said.

She pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not altered his objectives, and therefore, lifting sanctions is unwarranted.

“Regardless of negotiations, we would be in a much weaker position if sanctions are lifted prematurely. I also do not believe it is in the interest of the United States to remove sanctions now,” Kallas added.

Her remarks come in response to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s call for the EU to lift sanctions on Russia, arguing that the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump is ready to usher in a “new era” next week.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the EU has adopted 15 packages of sanctions against Moscow and is currently working on a 16th. The sanctions are reviewed every six months and require unanimous approval from all 27 member states to be extended.
