European Union leaders are meeting on Monday to discuss Georgia’s political trajectory and its aspirations for European integration. The meeting comes amid growing expectations of more extensive sanctions targeting countries perceived to be deviating from democratic norms and reform commitments.
Aleksi Petriashvili, a researcher at the Rondeli Foundation, expressed confidence in the EU’s readiness to take decisive action. “We will reach more extensive sanctions. This issue has essentially been resolved. The tough and principled speech of the European Commissioner at the previous debate was very important. This is a serious message for European bureaucrats and diplomats,” said Petriashvili.
He further noted that decisions regarding sanctions mechanisms were imminent, whether at the national level or through the European Commission.
The Georgian Government announced it halted the country’s EU accession until 2028 late last year, which sparked widespread protests in the country.
