Pawel Herczynski, the European Union ambassador to Georgia, on Thursday said the bloc needed “positive, constructive news” to come from Georgia on the implementation of the reforms outlined last year for granting Tbilisi the EU membership candidate status.
In his press comments, the diplomat said the Georgian authorities had implemented “many reforms”, but several questions still needed to be addressed.
“We need to improve the perception of Georgia in the EU institutions, as well as in the 27 EU member states, this is our common goal and we will try to cooperate with the Georgian authorities and support them to create a very positive atmosphere that will be based on the implementation of the 12 priorities [for obtaining the candidate status], as well as the general perception of Georgia”, the diplomat said.
The European Council granted Georgia a European perspective last year and outlined a 12-point reform agenda for the candidate status.
The bloc is scheduled to decide on the status later this year, following Georgia’s formal application for membership in March 2022, accelerated by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in late February.
