Khatia Dekanoidze, Deputy Chair of the National Committee of United National Movement, stated that the recent sanctions imposed on holders of Georgian diplomatic passports reflect the EU’s non-recognition of the Georgian Dream party’s legitimacy.
In a social media post, Dekanoidze explained, “These sanctions, which restrict visa-free travel for government and parliamentary representatives holding diplomatic or service passports, are a clear sign that the EU does not acknowledge the legitimacy of the Georgian Dream government.”
She added that while these officials could attempt to use national passports, their travel to the Schengen zone is effectively restricted. “Let them try to travel under these limitations. The system will easily flag their personal and passport numbers.”
Dekanoidze hailed the sanctions as a victory for public protests, asserting that they highlight the international community’s growing rejection of Bidzina Ivanishvili’s regime. She also noted that efforts to impose national-level sanctions against Georgian officials are ongoing, describing them as “far more severe.”
Meanwhile, Radio Free Europe reported that the EU Council has tasked the European Commission with preparing a formal proposal to revoke visa-free access for Georgian diplomatic passports. The initiative was reportedly supported by a qualified majority in the EU Council, and the Commission is expected to finalize the relevant documentation in the coming days.
