The European Parliament is set to debate the recent Georgian parliamentary elections, which have sparked protests over alleged fraud.
The agenda change, confirmed today by political groups within the Parliament, reflects growing EU concerns about democratic backsliding in Georgia.
In a statement, Parliament expressed concern over the “democratic decline” in Georgia following the disputed October elections, in which the ruling Georgian Dream party was declared the winner. The outcome led to protests in Georgia, with thousands demanding new elections under international oversight and a thorough investigation into alleged election manipulation.
Representatives from 15 EU countries have voiced “deep concern” over perceived breaches of international standards for free and fair elections. EU lawmakers echoed these concerns, citing violations identified by international observers and calling for a full investigation.
The debate will be followed by a vote on a resolution regarding the situation, scheduled for the Parliament’s plenary session from November 25-28.
