Georgia’s former Public Defender, Nino Lomjaria, has called on the United States to take appropriate steps towards the decision-makers involved in the adoption of the controversial Transparency of Foreign Influence law. Lomjaria warned on Friday that Russia was driving political changes in the countries it tried to make an ally by introducing legislation similar to its own, urging the US to view the developments from a broader perspective.
“Russia is initiating political changes in the countries where it is trying to make an ally by adopting legislation similar to Russian law,” Lomjaria asserted, who currently chairs the European Orbit of Georgia platform.
“Therefore, the US should look at these processes from a broader perspective, not separately”, she added.
Lomjaria emphasised the need for a strong response from the US towards those specific individuals and decision-makers who were establishing “authoritarianism in Georgia and altering the political course against the will of the people and in violation of the constitution”.
“I hope there will be an appropriate response from their side towards those specific persons and decision-makers who are establishing authoritarianism in Georgia and changing the political course against the will of the people and in violation of the constitution,” said Lomjaria.
