FM candidate pledges commitment to “transparent” elections, reacts to controversies on voting abroad

In Wednesday’s address to a joint session of Georgia’s parliamentary committees, Ilia Darchiashvili, the candidate for the Minister of Foreign Affairs, reiterated the government’s dedication to upholding transparent and lawful electoral procedures both domestically and abroad.

Darchiashvili emphasized the “close collaboration” between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Central Election Commission (CEC), highlighting “active consultations” to ensure the “successful administration” of upcoming elections. He underscored the significance of a recent conference held with consuls in Tbilisi, where practical cooperation with the CEC was discussed in depth.Addressing concerns regarding the registration of citizens residing abroad and seeking consular services, Darchiashvili emphasized the existing protocol for consular registration, which he claimed was actively promoted by diplomatic representatives. He dismissed allegations of political speculation surrounding citizen registration and the opening of polling precincts abroad, affirming that such procedures would adhere “strictly to the law and established protocols”.

Darchiashvili stressed the importance of facilitating citizens’ ability to vote through consular registration, expressing confidence in the diligent efforts of diplomats to ensure citizens are registered and able to exercise their constitutional rights.

With elections scheduled for October, Darchiashvili expressed optimism that the process would be “exemplary” in terms of administration, pledging the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ “full readiness” to contribute significantly to this endeavor.
