Niko Lekishvili, former Tbilisi Mayor and Member of Parliament, passed away on Friday at the age of 77 after a long illness. His death was confirmed by domestic media outlets.
Lekishvili was a key figure in Georgian politics, having served as the Mayor of Tbilisi from 1993 to 1995. He was also a member of three convocations of the Georgian Parliament: as a majoritarian MP from Didube district in the 1992-1995 Parliament, the leader of the parliamentary majority from 1999 to 2004, and head of the Sectoral Economy and Economic Policy Committee from 2004 to 2008, where he represented the Independent Majoritarian MPs faction.
In 1991, Lekishvili was one of the signatories of the Act of Restoration of Georgia’s State Independence on April 9.
