Former US ambassador: No major changes expected in US policy toward Georgia

Former US Ambassador to Georgia, Ian Kelly, has stated that he does not foresee significant shifts in American policy toward Georgia, despite recent changes in US domestic politics. Kelly suggested that the bipartisan support for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration goals remains strong among both Republicans and Democrats in Congress, emphasizing the sustained US commitment to Georgia’s aspirations toward NATO and the European Union.

However, Kelly expressed concerns that some leaders within Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party may not fully grasp the nuances of power distribution within the US government. He highlighted that while international leaders from countries like Venezuela and Iran congratulated Georgian Dream on its recent electoral success, Washington’s silence is telling. According to Kelly, Georgian Dream should take US concerns seriously if it wants to achieve full international recognition and legitimacy.

Kelly also recommended that the Georgian government initiate an internationally supervised investigation into the allegations against it, noting that this step would be essential for securing stronger international credibility.
