French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has firmly stated that the European Union will not tolerate any country infringing on its sovereign borders. His remarks came in response to recent statements by US President-elect Donald Trump, who reiterated his desire to acquire Greenland from Denmark, calling it “absolutely necessary” for American security.
Denmark has categorically rejected the possibility of such a deal. At a press conference on January 7, Trump was asked if he would rule out using economic or military pressure to pursue the acquisition. He declined to confirm that such measures were off the table, raising international concerns.
Speaking to Radio France, Barrot emphasized Greenland’s status as an autonomous territory of Denmark and a part of the European Union. “It is not even possible to talk about the EU allowing any other country in the world to attack its sovereign borders,” he asserted.
While Barrot dismissed the likelihood of the United States taking military action to seize Greenland, he acknowledged the growing tension in global politics. “If you ask me if I think the United States will invade Greenland, my answer is no. But have we entered a period of survival of the fittest? My answer is yes,” he said.
