French minister expresses concern over current events in Georgia

French Minister for European Affairs, Benjamin Haddad, has expressed “deep concern” regarding the recent developments in Georgia, emphasizing the country’s aspirations for European integration.

In a statement, Haddad affirmed France’s “unwavering support” for the European ambitions of the Georgian people, particularly as Georgia seeks to solidify its status as a candidate for European Union membership.

“Georgia is a candidate country for the European Union, and we support the European aspirations of the Georgian people,” Haddad said.

However, he stressed the EU represented a unity of values, which he said includes adherence to the rule of law, respect for fundamental rights, an independent judiciary, and the protection of civil society and minority rights, including those of the LGBT community.

Haddad expressed concern over the current situation in Georgia, indicating that it posed challenges to these essential values. He revealed that France, alongside Germany and Poland, has drafted a letter addressing these issues, which they intend to present to their European partners.

“We call on the Georgian authorities to respect the freedom of elections and the rule of law,” he urged, reiterating that the principles were fundamental to the European Union’s identity. “If Georgia wants to continue its European path, which we wholeheartedly support, it must respect these fundamental values,” Haddad concluded.
