Hundreds of workers across Georgia have taken to the streets today under the banner of “Georgia on strike!” in a large-scale protest aimed at challenging the current political landscape sparked by the Government’s decision last year to halt EU accession process until 2028.
The suspension came following the claims of rigged October 26 general elections last year, with only several countries recognising the current Georgian Dream authorities.
The general warning strike began at 15:00 and is set to last for three hours, with a variety of industries, including companies, universities, food establishments, and other business sectors, participating, demanding an election rerun in the country.
Many businesses have already closed their doors in solidarity with the strike, while employees have gathered in public spaces to express their discontent. Protesters are holding up signs calling for urgent political change, including slogans like “We demand new elections” and “Freedom for the regime’s prisoners”, in reference to up to 500 individuals arrested during protests.
