On the birthday of Georgia’s national hero, General-Major Geno Adamia, the Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Levan Mgaloblishvili, along with members of the Abkhazian government, laid flowers at Adamia’s bust on Heroes’ Square in Tbilisi and honored the memory of those who died for Georgia’s territorial integrity.
“Today, we once again pay tribute to the devoted patriots of our country, including National Hero Geno Adamia. He was a figure who defended Georgia’s territorial integrity until his last breath and remains an invaluable example of heroism and patriotism for us and future generations. It is our duty to always remember our national heroes and do everything to keep their names alive,” Mgaloblishvili stated.
A memorial service for the fallen heroes was held at the site by Father Levan Janashia, the abbot of Tbilisi’s Ilori St. George Church.
The ceremony was attended by members of the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia and Geno Adamia’s family members.
General-Major Geno Adamia was the commander of the 23rd Mechanized Brigade of the Georgian Armed Forces. After the fall of Sukhumi on September 27, 1993, he refused to surrender and continued fighting against separatist forces with a small group of soldiers. He was killed in battle near the Kelasuri Bridge on September 28, 1993.
His remains were transferred to Tbilisi in November 1993 by his fellow soldiers and laid to rest at Saburtalo Cemetery.
In 2020, Geno Adamia was posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Georgia.
