Georgia in need of further reforms ahead of decision on its EU candidacy – Borrell

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Joseph Borrell on Monday said Georgia required further reforms ahead of the bloc’s decision later his year whether to grant the country its membership candidate status.

“We had lunch with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia to discuss the historic opportunity in terms of Georgia’s European perspective, which also needs to strengthen democracy. We confirm that Georgia is experiencing significant progress, but needs more reforms, as Georgia’s candidate status will be discussed at the end of the year”, said the EU official during the meeting of the bloc’s Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg.

He called on Darchiashvili, who had been invited at the session, to send “positive signals to Brussels and the member states by implementing the priorities related to the accession process”.
