Georgia PM will get “last warnings” at meeting with Scholz – opposition MP

Roman Gotsiridze, an opposition MP, on Monday claimed the country’s prime minister Irakli Garibashvili was expected to receive “last warnings” on potential sanctions and possible developments on “what might happen to this government”, at his forthcoming meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday.

The MP claimed the warnings would include potential sanctions on the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili and the “fate” of his government if it proceeded with the “country’s derailing” from its pro-western course.

“He [Garibashvili] will be told everything”, Gotsiridze said. He noted the European Union “wishes” to grant Georgia its membership candidate status by the end of this year, while the current government “not only not-fulfilling the conditions to obtain the status, but also trying to change the country’s foreign course”.

For its part, the current government is accusing the opposition of “destructive actions to hamper the country’s EU integration”, and claims all 12 conditions outlined by the European Council last June to grant the status to Georgia would be fulfilled by the end of this month. The bloc is expected to decide on Georgia’s candidacy in December.
