Levan Mgaloblishvili, Chairman of the Government of Georgia’s Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, on Friday honored the memory of those who lost their lives defending Georgia’s territorial integrity during a solemn ceremony at the memorial for fallen heroes.
Accompanied by his children and grandson, Mgaloblishvili laid flowers at the memorial plaque dedicated to the sacrifices made in the conflict that began on August 14, 1992, and culminated with the fall of Sukhumi, the main city of the Abkhazia region, on September 27, 1993.
During the tribute, Mgaloblishvili emphasized the importance of public diplomacy alongside political efforts. “I came today with my children and grandson, and I am sure that very soon they will see Sokhumi, they will see Abkhazia, and they will continue their work with the same dignity and spirit as the name of their great-grandfather, Bidzina Mgaloblishvili, is engraved on this wall,” he said.
The official called for reconciliation between Georgian and Abkhazian communities, asserting that their shared traditions and customs could pave the way for a united future. “We have to do everything for Georgian and Abkhazian sisters and brothers to continue living together. The Georgian Dream authorities will do everything to prevent even one name from being added to this wall,” he added.
In a gesture of respect, Mgaloblishvili also decorated the busts of Georgian national heroes Zhiuli Shartava and Geno Adamia with flowers, paying homage to their contributions to the nation.
