The US Department of Justice has announced that the Iranian government hired two individuals to assassinate a journalist living in America. One of the suspects is a Georgian citizen.
The target of the alleged plot was Masih Alinejad, an Iranian dissident journalist and women’s rights activist residing in New York. Alinejad is known for her outspoken criticism of the Iranian regime. According to US authorities, Iranian intelligence had previously planned to kidnap her.
Among those arrested is 40-year-old Polad Omarov, also known as Araz Aliev, a Georgian citizen. US officials claim both suspects are linked to an organized crime group operating in Eastern Europe. Court documents reveal that the plan was to assassinate Alinejad using an AK-47 assault rifle, but the FBI thwarted the attempt.
Both suspects have been found guilty. Their sentencing is scheduled for September when the court will determine the length of their prison terms.
