Georgian Dream MP calls MEGOBARI Act protests desperate move by foreign agents

Georgian Dream MP Giorgi Sosiashvili has strongly criticized protests organized in support of the MEGOBARI Act, calling them the last-ditch efforts of foreign-backed agents attempting to destabilize the country.

Speaking about the demonstrations led by NGOs, Sosiashvili dismissed the act as a “hostile operation cloaked as a MEGOBARI Act” and accused its backers of manipulating public sentiment to serve external interests.

“This is the last struggle of forces in agony. They want to convince people that they have passed a so-called MEGOBARI Act. But what does this really mean? It means keeping the country in turmoil, mobilizing foreign-backed agents, blocking Rustaveli Avenue, and bullying the nation,” Sosiashvili said.

He claimed that foreign donors had invested heavily in NGOs and pseudo-charitable organizations, using them as a cover for political interference. “Look at the Nanuka Zhorzholiani Foundation—they pretended to hand out food to children while funneling money to undermine the country,” he alleged.

The MP also criticized youth involvement in the protests, accusing organizers of manipulating students for political gain. However, he asserted that Georgian youth were becoming more aware of the true motives behind such movements.

“Every time they try to mobilize people, they fail. The Georgian people have seen through their tactics. These scripted scenarios, crafted by Franklin Club strategists, are doomed to fail,” he stated.

Sosiashvili drew parallels between the current protests and past periods of political instability, warning that if left unchecked, they could push the country toward the chaos of the 1990s.

“They burned down Rustaveli before. They want to drag the country into civil conflict again. But we will not allow it,” he declared, adding that the government remains committed to stability and protecting Georgia from foreign manipulation.

Concluding his remarks, Sosiashvili emphasized that any attempt to incite unrest in Georgia is destined to fail, as the public has become more aware of external attempts to interfere in national affairs.

MEGOBARI Act is the legislation, initiated by two US Senators, set to be reviewed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on March 27, aims to impose sanctions on individuals seen as “undermining democracy” in Georgia.
