The ruling Georgian Dream party is putting the country’s historic opportunity for EU integration at risk, according to German Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer. Fischer expressed his concerns in a social media post on Monday, following a meeting between the presidents of Germany and Georgia.
Fischer said that during the meeting in Berlin, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier conveyed his disappointment to Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili over the stalled process of Georgia’s integration into Euro-Atlantic structures.
“Today, in Berlin, President Steinmeier met with President Zurabishvili. He thanked her for her clear support of EU integration and expressed regret over the failure of this process. The Georgian government is jeopardizing a historic opportunity,” Fischer wrote.
The meeting between Zurabishvili and Steinmeier also included discussions on the pre-election political climate in Georgia, with Zourabichvili providing insight into the current situation in the country.
