Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) released a statement addressing ongoing protests near the Parliament building in Tbilisi, warning that all unlawful acts by protesters will face appropriate legal consequences.
According to the Ministry, certain participants in the demonstration have resorted to violent behavior, including throwing blunt objects, pyrotechnics, and incendiary materials at police officers.
“Police units are mobilized around the Parliament to maintain public order. From the onset of the demonstration, aggressive members of the protest began engaging in unlawful and violent actions,” the statement read.
The MIA called on protesters to express their dissent peacefully and within the framework of the law, emphasizing that violations will not go unaddressed.
Earlier in the day, the Ministry announced the arrest of a 25-year-old protester accused of preparing explosives. Authorities stated that the individual was initially detained for obstructing traffic and disobeying police orders. A subsequent search reportedly uncovered Molotov cocktails in the suspect’s possession.
The protests, part of a broader wave of demonstrations across the country, have escalated tensions between the government and opposition groups, who continue to demand early elections and accelerated steps toward EU integration.
