Georgian Patriarchate calls for restraint from protesters and police

The Georgian Patriarchate has issued a statement urging restraint from both demonstrators and law enforcement amid escalating tensions following the November 30 clashes on Rustaveli Avenue.

“We are deeply saddened that, despite the Church’s calls for peace, demonstrations on Rustaveli Avenue have escalated into serious confrontations. Footage shared in the media and on social platforms reveals actions that exceed the bounds of legality and morality,” the statement reads.

The Church emphasized its concern for all individuals involved, stating, “Both sides are dear to us, and we are praying for them, as well as for the swift recovery of the injured.”

The Patriarchate appealed to demonstrators to exercise wisdom and stay within the boundaries of lawful protest while urging law enforcement to show maximum patience and refrain from exceeding the limits of legal action.

The statement also called for the government to promptly inform the public about violations and ongoing investigations, highlighting the importance of transparency in de-escalating the situation.

“Regardless of the values we strive to protect, we must not forget that humans are created in the image of God and hold the highest dignity in this world,” the statement concluded, invoking the Virgin Mary’s protection for Georgia.
