Georgian PM claims readiness for EU integration despite process halt

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday claimed the country’s “steady progress” and “readiness for European Union negotiations”, despite his Government’s decision last year to halt the integration into the bloc until 2028.

Speaking to a PhoenixTV journalist in the United Arab Emirates, Kobakhidze assured the “country is growing economically and in many other areas as well. We are steadfastly following the path of the country’s development”.

Regarding Georgia’s aspirations for European Union integration, Kobakhidze underscored that the country “remains prepared to engage in negotiations, but the final decision lies with the EU”.

“Now it depends on the European Union to make this decision. We are ready for this. At the same time, we are firmly following the path of the country’s development and reforms. So the country will achieve even greater progress,” he affirmed.

When asked whether Georgia would have to wait another four years before starting negotiations, Kobakhidze responded that the timeline depends on the EU’s stance.

“We have stated very clearly that if the European Union makes this decision, we are ready for it. Improving relations with the European Union is in our interests. Let’s wait and see what approach the European Union will choose,” he said.
