Georgian PM: If Trump fails to overcome ‘Deep State,’ US relations can suffer

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday expressed concern over the future of US-Georgia relations, saying that if President Donald Trump failed to overcome what he described as the “Deep State,” the status quo of the past four years could continue, potentially harming ties between the two countries.

Kobakhidze highlighted the impact of Trump’s election, noting it had already produced “tangible shifts” in US policy and public perception.

“The main result of Trump’s election is that society has started understanding things differently,” he claimed. “We can already see that the new US government is addressing issues that the previous administration did not, many of which we in Georgia have been discussing for years,” Kobakhidze said.

The PM further outlined two possible scenarios for US-Georgia relations under Trump. “If Trump succeeds in overcoming the ‘Deep State,’ it would be a positive scenario for Georgia, leading to an improvement in our relations with the United States,” Kobakhidze explained. “However, if Trump fails to defeat it, there is a risk that developments will continue to unfold as they have over the past four years.”

The term “Deep State” has become a central part of the narrative promoted by the ruling Georgian Dream party. This conspiracy theory suggests that a covert network of powerful figures operates behind the scenes in the US government, pulling strings independently of elected leaders to further their own agenda. Initially framed as the “Global War Party,” this theory has been invoked frequently by Georgian officials to explain US foreign policy decisions and domestic challenges.

Members of the Georgian government have regularly used this concept to justify their position and to criticize those who oppose their policies. They claim that the shadowy forces within the US aim to destabilize Georgia, with some even alleging that opposition parties in Georgia had been aligned with these international networks.
