Georgian PM predicts sweeping victory for ruling party in local elections

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze expressed confidence in ruling Georgian Dream party’s dominance ahead of the upcoming local elections, asserting that the ruling team will secure victories in all 64 municipalities. In an interview with Rustavi 2, Kobakhidze described the elections as a clear reflection of the “radical opposition’s declining influence” and claimed that the vast majority of the Georgian public stands with the current government.

He emphasized that whether the opposition participates or not, it would have no substantial impact on the outcome, adding that their absence would only simplify the ruling party’s path to victory.

“It makes no essential difference to us whether they participate and suffer a heavy defeat, or whether they don’t participate and are defeated that way. If they don’t take part in the elections, of course, it will make things easier for us… In that case, the result that is bound to happen will come even more easily. That’s why we actually hope more that they won’t participate — if they do, that’s their business,” the PM said.

He further stated that the opposition will have minimal representation in the new municipal councils.
