Georgian PM Irakli Garibashvili and president Salome Zurabishvili have strongly condemned the Russia’s recent move to recognize Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk as independent states, saying that Russia is repeating the scenario of the 2008 war in Georgia when it recognized two Georgian regions as independent republics.
“The recognition of Donetsk, Luhansk by Russia is another step directed against the fundamental principles of international law and unfortunately repeats the occupation of Georgian territories in 2008. We strongly support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” Garibashvili tweeted.
Zurabishvili also said that the step was repeating the scenario that led to the occupation of 20 percent of Georgian territory.
“Georgia stands by you President Zelensky and in support of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and peace,” Zurabishvili said.
Russian president Vladimir Putin made an announcement about the move yesterday amid fears that the country may invade Ukraine.
The international community has condemned the step and Russia warned of ‘very strict sanctions’ if it attacks Ukraine.
