Georgian, Romanian presidents sign “historic” declaration on strategic cooperation

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and her Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis on Tuesday signed a declaration on strategic cooperation, calling the document “historic” which would further upgrade partnership, for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration among them. 

Iohannis stated that the document was also seen to strengthen cooperation in the fields of transport and energy, as well as personal and people-to-people relations.

“This year marks the 30th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Romania. Now we have created a historic moment by signing the declaration of strategic partnership and  laid the foundation for the strategic partnership between our countries as we agreed in 2019 in New York”, said the Romanian president, pledging his “strong support” for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration process. 

At a press conference with her counterpart, Zourabichvili said “from here in Romania, I condemn once again the brutal missile attack carried out against the Ukrainian population.It is completely unacceptable for the entire civilised world”. 

Describing the new declaration, the Georgian official stated that “Georgia and Romania resolve to elevate their solid partnership to the level of a Strategic Partnership.”

“Our ties date back 300 years. Today’s historic agreement on Strategic Partnership will turn a new page in our relations and will become a precursor to an even more successful and prosperous future for our nations”, she said. 

For the first time in a decade, It was the Georgian President’s first official visit to Romania.
