Georgian ruling party slams EP resolution, aligns with Trump’s anti-‘deep state’ rhetoric

The ruling Georgian Dream party on Thursday condemned the European Parliament’s latest resolution that urged sanctions against the GD government officials, calling it an “attack against Georgia” and its “democratically elected government”.

In a declaration from its Political Council, the party linked its stance US President Donald Trump’s battle against what he describes as the “deep state.” The statement cited Trump’s remarks from March 26, 2023, in which he characterized his political struggle as a decisive battle between his administration and the “deep state” in America.

Following Trump’s return to office, the Georgian Dream expressed support for his efforts, wishing him success in dismantling the “deep state.” Extending this notion to Europe, the party warned that either the “deep state” would destroy the European Union or the EU would need to liberate itself from its influence.

“Just as we wish President Trump success in his fight against the ‘deep state,’ we also wish Europe the strength to free itself from its harmful influence. We will stand with patriotic Europeans in this battle,” the statement read.

The party further reinforced its criticism of the European Parliament by referencing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s recent statement that European institutions are “impossible to take seriously.”

“Unfortunately, it is indeed impossible to take the European Parliament seriously today,” the statement concluded, emphasizing Georgian Dream’s skepticism towards the EU’s political mechanisms.
