Georgian volunteer Giorgi Roinishvili killed in Ukraine war

Giorgi Roinishvili, a deputy commander of the special unit Tbilisi fighting against Russia in Ukraine has been killed in combat in the Kursk region. The announcement was made by the unit on their social media platform, where they also reported three additional volunteers had been wounded in the same battle.

The special unit expressed their condolences to Roinishvili’s family, honoring him with the message, “Glory to the heroes! Glory to Georgia!”
Since the onset of the war in Ukraine, several hundred Georgian volunteers – estimates suggest up to 1,500 – have joined the fight against Russian forces. The volunteers are integrated into various battalions and are actively participating in front-line operations.

The conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has resulted in the death of more than 70 Georgian fighters. As of August 2024, Ukrainian forces have launched an invasion into Russia’s Kursk region, a move aligned with President Ukraine’s broader strategy to achieve victory in the ongoing war. The front line now spans over 1,000 kilometers.
