Georgians residing in Estonia organized a demonstration titled “A Human Chain for Georgia” on Saturday at Tallinn’s Freedom Square.
The event expressed solidarity with the “Unity Chain for Georgia” protest held in multiple cities and towns across Georgia on December 28 at 15:00 (Tbilisi time).
Participants of the Tallinn demonstration voiced the main demands of protesters in Georgia:
• Mikheil Kavelashvili is not a legitimate president and must resign.
• All political prisoners must be released.
• New parliamentary elections must be held.
Mariam Nozadze, an activist and organizer of the demonstration, emphasized the significance of raising awareness about the dire political situation in Georgia. She highlighted the importance of solidarity with those fighting for democratic values and reaffirmed a shared commitment to human rights and freedom.
“We fully support the demands of the protests in Georgia – the call for new parliamentary elections, the release of political prisoners, and the imposition of sanctions on Ivanishvili and senior officials of Georgian Dream. This is not a politically or propagandistically driven protest but rather a people’s protest, and the will of the people is evident on the streets every day in Georgia,” Nozadze stated. She added that the protests will continue until these demands are met.
The protests in Georgia began one month ago after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that the government would halt EU accession negotiation talks until 2028. This decision was widely condemned by the majority of Georgians, President Salome Zourabichvili, opposition parties, and Georgia’s international partners in the EU and the US.
