The German Bundestag has adopted a resolution titled “For the European Future of Georgia,” receiving backing from the ruling coalition, which includes the Social Democratic Party, the Greens, and the Liberal Democratic Party. The opposition parties, including the Christian Democratic Union, the far-right Alternative for Germany, and the far-left Union of Sarah Wagenknecht, opposed the resolution, while the Leftists abstained.
The resolution criticizes the current Georgian government’s “authoritarian and anti-European policies”, warning that these actions jeopardize Georgia’s prospects for European integration.
It specifically highlights the controversial Transparency of Foreign Influence law, stating that it will hinder Georgia’s progress toward joining the European Union.
The resolution also draws attention to the role of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder and honorary chairman of the ruling party Georgian Dream, arguing that the preservation of his power takes precedence over Georgia’s European future and democratic stability.
This resolution signals continued support from Germany for Georgia’s aspirations to integrate into European structures while urging the Georgian government to reconsider its current course.
