German politician Thomas Hacker calls for immediate release of Georgian media founder Mzia Amaglobeli

Thomas Hacker, a German Bundestag member representing the Free Democratic Party (FDP), has issued a strong statement condemning the detention of prominent Georgian journalist Mzia Amaglobeli.

In a post on X, Hacker said: “Mzia Amaglobeli was detained and forced to silence. Her detention and inhumane treatment in custody violate basic standards of a functional democracy and human rights. She must be released immediately!”

Amaglobeli, the founder of prominent independent media outlets Batumelebi and Netgazeti, has been held in pre-trial detention since January 12, 2025, after being accused of assaulting a police officer. Human rights organizations and press freedom advocates have labeled the charges as politically motivated, pointing to the journalist’s critical reporting on government policies and alleged abuses.
