In a joint statement issued on December 12, 2024, the International Press Institute (IPI) and its global network of leading editors strongly condemned the escalating violence and repression against journalists covering protests in Georgia.
The protests erupted following the Georgian government’s controversial decision to pause EU membership negotiations until the end of 2028. Since November 28, local media organizations have reported that at least 90 journalists have been physically assaulted, verbally abused, or obstructed while covering the demonstrations. Many of these journalists, representing independent and government-critical outlets, have faced brutal attacks by state security forces and private individuals, alongside government smear campaigns aimed at discrediting their work.
“This unprecedented assault on the media in Georgia signals a grave deterioration of press freedom and democratic values,” the statement read. “Journalists have been viciously beaten, detained, and had their equipment destroyed—all while enduring a hostile environment created by government rhetoric and legal harassment.”
Despite the growing dangers, Georgia’s free press continues its critical mission to inform the public. “We are inspired by the bravery and resilience of Georgia’s independent media. Your courage in the face of these attacks is an inspiration,” the IPI emphasized, expressing unwavering solidarity with journalists risking their safety to report the truth.
The IPI and its Central and Eastern Europe independent media network called for immediate action to protect press freedom and hold those responsible for violence against journalists accountable.
