The Georgian Justice Ministry has offered former president Mikheil Saakashvili, who has been on hunger strike since October 1, a transfer to Gori military hospital in central Georgia, ‘where his health and life will be fully protected.’
The offer comes on the heels of yesterday’s incident in Gldani Prison No 18 hospital, where Saakashvili reportedly fainted.
Justice Minister Rati Bregadze stated earlier today that the Georgian Dream government has ensured Saakashvili’s rights in accordance with the law since the day of his arrest, and that Saakashvili puts others’ lives at risk by his hunger strike, referring to the individuals who are also on hunger strike in solidarity with the ex-president.
He also said that the recent refusal of the European Court of Human Rights on Saakashvili’s transfer to a civil clinic, ‘proves his rights are protected.’
Saakashvili says that he is ready to stop his hunger strike if he is transferred to a civil clinic. However, the government believes that the transfer carries threats to his life and health.
