Government will target NGOs, warms TI Georgia head

Eka Gigauri, the director of Transparency International Georgia, on Friday expressed concern that the Georgian government was allegedly expected to target non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as Western partners begin reassessing their cooperation with the country.

Gigauri stressed that “despite potential attacks”, the priority remained monitoring the upcoming elections to ensure the integrity of the democratic process.

“We will be the targets of their attacks, but that doesn’t matter,” Gigauri said, highlighting the potential risks faced by the NGO sector. “What’s important is that our focus remains on monitoring the upcoming elections for the sake of our country. This is what we are discussing, and it’s also the focus of our Western partners.”

She also noted that Western partners had already begun to review their cooperation with the Georgian government, following the ruling party’s adoption of the controversial foreign influence transparency law in May.
