Head of Georgia’s National Centre for Disease Control Amiran Gamkrelidze says that a new variant of coronavirus dubbed as Omicron may cause a serious surge in daily infections, reaching 10,000 and more daily cases if people refuse to observe general guidelines and vaccination.
He says that the new strain ‘is not as dangerous as Delta variant.’ However, very high figures of daily infections will be too complicated for the healthcare sector to manage.
Gamkrelidze has urged the public to refrain from large gatherings for the New Year holiday, wear facemasks and get the Covid shot.
1,104,100 have received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine in the country since March 2021, while health officials say that a booster dose is also necessary, especially for risk groups, to prevent serious complications.
