The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has announced that it will use legal measures to disperse violent protesters and clear the area around the Parliament building. The decision follows escalating tensions during ongoing demonstrations on Rustaveli Avenue.
In a statement, the MIA highlighted that some groups within the protest resorted to violence, engaging in confrontations with police stationed near the Parliament’s main entrance.
“Protesters have thrown various objects, including stones, glass bottles, and fireworks, at law enforcement officers,” the statement reads.
The ministry also pointed out that media footage revealed some demonstrators carrying prohibited items, which were used against the police.
From the outset of the protests, the MIA had called on organizers and participants to ensure the demonstrations remained peaceful and within legal boundaries. Despite these appeals, the ministry stated that the protests have now escalated beyond the limits of lawful assembly.
“To restore order and secure the area around the Parliament, the ministry will employ special measures against violent groups,” the MIA affirmed.
The situation remains tense as the government responds to the unfolding events on Rustaveli Avenue.
