Kyiv summit on February 24: Who will visit Ukraine on third anniversary of war

On February 24, Kyiv will host a summit marking the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The event will bring together officials from partner countries and European leaders, with some attending in person and others joining online.

European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Monday that they would travel to the Ukrainian capital for the occasion.

Costa stated that he and the European Commission President would visit Kyiv to reaffirm their support for the heroic Ukrainian people and their democratically elected president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Notably, a day earlier, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed that the European Commission would send a delegation to Kyiv for the anniversary.

“The government will hold joint consultations with European Commission colleagues. Several bilateral meetings are planned, where we will discuss security and defense cooperation, strengthening sanctions against the aggressor, economic collaboration between Ukraine and the EU, and Ukraine’s integration into the European Union,” Shmyhal stated.

Among the high-profile guests will be Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, who confirmed his visit on Wednesday, February 19.

“This visit is being organized to mark the third anniversary of the war. Yes, we will be in Ukraine during this time. Many leaders will attend, making it a much broader event than just the Baltic and Northern European formats,” Nausėda said.

According to him, the summit will provide an opportunity for Ukraine’s partners to “discuss recent developments and determine what needs to be done in the near future.”

Spain will be represented by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who announced his visit to Kyiv on social media platform X.

“On Monday (February 24), I will be in Kyiv to reaffirm Spain’s support for Ukrainian democracy and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy,” Sánchez wrote.

As previously stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine is organizing this meeting of partner country leaders to outline a clear vision for the next steps regarding peace, security guarantees, and the collective policies of Western nations.
