Prominent Georgian lawyer Mikheil Ramishvili has left Georgia and is seeking political asylum abroad, claiming that the Georgian Dream government has left him with no other option.
In an interview with Formula, Ramishvili stated that he would depart on March 2 because he saw no way to protect himself or his clients under the current government. He has represented high-profile cases, including the Tamar Bachaliashvili case and the Cyanide case.
Ramishvili accused the authorities of attempting to discredit and eliminate lawyers who participate in protests and defend democracy activists. He also alleged that the government is using a property dispute over his house as an excuse to launch a legal case against him, despite his insistence that he legally purchased the property in 2019.
According to Formula TV, a court ruling has stripped him of his property based on a contested document with allegedly forged signatures. Ramishvili claims that the government is using this case as a pretext to target and undermine independent lawyers.
