Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kēstus Budris has rejected claims that Lithuania’s support for Georgia and sanctions imposed on its politicians constitute interference in the country’s domestic politics.
“This does not concern domestic politics or support for any specific political group. It is about Georgia’s promise, made a year ago and yet unfulfilled, to hold free and fair elections. This is a key condition for advancing its relations with the European Union and achieving EU candidate status,” Budris said during a press briefing, as reported by local media.
The remarks came in response to criticism from Remigijus Žemaitaitis, leader of the Nemunas Dawn party, who argued that Lithuania should avoid involvement in the internal affairs of other nations.
“This is only about [Georgia breaking its promises], not about us trying to conduct internal political processes,” the Foreign Minister clarified.
