Mikheil Kavelashvili, a representative of the People’s Power movement and a member of the ruling Georgian Dream majority in the state legislature despite leaving the party in 2022, on Wednesday leveled accusations against President Salome Zourabichvili, claiming she was acting as a foreign agent and engaging in activities “aimed at sparking a revolution” ahead of the October 26 general elections.
Kavelashvili asserted that Zourabichvili’s recent actions, including meetings with opposition leaders as part of the Georgian Charter initiated by her in May to form a technical Government after the potential win of the opposition in the forthcoming vote, were part of a “deliberate plan to destabilize the country and challenge the government’s authority”.
The MP, whose movement has been engaged in open anti-Western propaganda and who appeared among the top 20 of the GD’s electoral list, claimed the actions were “in violation of the Georgian constitution”, which mandates that the president remain neutral and non-partisan.
He further accused Zourabichvili of aligning with the opposition and working towards establishing a dual government, which he described as a coup d’état in progress.
Kavelashvili stressed the President’s behavior was part of a coordinated effort to “delegitimize the ruling Georgian Dream party and disrupt the upcoming elections”.
The lawmaker called on Zourabichvili to either resign and officially join the opposition or cease her alleged revolutionary activities, warning that her continued involvement in these actions “represents a direct challenge” to the constitutional order in Georgia.
