The Ministry of Internal Affairs on Thursday announced the arrest of the Deputy Chairman of Marneuli City Assembly Rovshan Iskandarov, and another individual following accusations of ballot stuffing during the October 26 parliamentary elections.
The alleged incident took place in Marneuli municipality’s 69th polling station in Sadakhlo village, where voting was halted and results annulled after ballots were reportedly placed in the ballot box illegally.
In his social media post on Wednesday, the GD claimed it was a “provocation staged by the opposition”.
Preliminary results from the October 26 elections indicate a lead for the ruling Georgian Dream party, with over 50% of the votes.
The vote count shows Georgian Dream with 53.93%, followed by Coalition for Change at 11.04%, Unity – National Movement at 10.17%, Strong Georgia at 8.81%, and Gakharia for Georgia at 7.77%.
Despite this lead, opposition parties have rejected the results, claiming the election was rigged and calling for a new vote to be overseen by an international election administration. President Salome Zourabichvili has also voiced concerns, labeling the elections as fraudulent.
Georgian Dream has denied any allegations of election fraud, instead accusing opposition factions and NGOs of perpetuating disinformation and engaging in a smear campaign.
