Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has linked the recent attack on US presidential candidate Donald Trump to an unspecified “global war party,” while the US State Department has called for restraint in making public statements about the incident.
Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, on Monday urged both the American public and foreign nations to avoid speculation and refrain from making irresponsible statements before the facts were established regarding the attack on Trump.
“Law enforcement officers have spoken about this investigation – about what they know and what they don’t know. They will continue to make public the results of this investigation until the investigation continues,” Miller stated.
“The president asked the American public to refrain from speculation, not to make irresponsible statements before knowing the facts. I would extend the same appeal to foreign countries as well,” added Miller.
PM Kobakhidze has claimed that the so-called global war party has made violent attacks on politicians in America and Europe a common occurrence.
The Georgian authorities have not identified those behind the alleged party but suggest they are from the West. This claim comes amid allegations from the domestic opposition and civil sector that the Georgian ruling party is using conspiracy theories to demonize the US and its western allies, potentially to shift the country back towards Russian influence.
