Miner in western Georgia sews his mouth shut on 11th day of protests

miner in Georgia’s western Chiatura municipality on Thursday sewed his mouth shut on the 11th day of protests, demanding decent working conditions and increased wages along with his colleagues from the managing company Georgian Manganese. 

 

Around 3,000 employees of the company are on hunger strike, with all 15 mines in the town shut. 

 

The miners are demanding an increase in their salaries by 40 percent – with an average salary  standing at ₾1,000 ($380)-  reduction of working hours, improvements in their insurance packages and resolving environmental problems in the city caused by the mining work.

 

The Georgian Manganese cites itself as the country’s leading producer and exporter of high-quality ferroalloys and manganese ore, operating several domestic plants including Zestafoni Ferroalloys Plant, Chiatura Manganese Ore Mine, Vartsikhe 2005 Hydro Power Plant.
