Georgian Parliament Member Dimitri Khundadze has criticized US sactions against ruling party Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili, describing them as “political persecution for his love of his homeland.” In a social media post, Khundadze claimed that the sanctions are a response to Ivanishvili’s role in ensuring Georgia avoids involvement in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“The US sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili are political persecution for his patriotism, while Zelenskyy’s hasty celebration of this fact underscores Ukraine’s desire to draw Georgia into the war. The fact that Georgia does not share Ukraine’s fate today is thanks to Ivanishvili, which is why he is not forgiven,” Khundadze stated.
He went on to argue that such actions will not yield the desired outcome for the West, as “trading the country’s fate” is not in Ivanishvili’s character. Khundadze also referred to what he called the “Global War Party,” accusing them of misunderstanding the Georgian spirit and history, which spans over 3,000 years and has endured much greater challenges.
