Neutralization of UNM “important” for healthier political environment – ruling party head

Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday said the further weakening and “neutralization” of the United National Movement opposition party was important for the formation of a “healthier” political environment in the country.

Speaking to the media, the official expressed his hopes an “intra-party confrontation” in the UNM would continue until the 2024 parliamentary  elections that as he said would be reflected on its results.

The UNM is the largest opposition group in the country in office between 2004-2012.

Controversies inside the party started earlier this year, with several of the party members demanding the elections for the party chair.

In January Nika Melia, the then chair of the party, was defeated by Levan Khabeishvili, with the former claiming the new head had been backed by former UNM officials David Kezerashvili and Vano Merabishvili, whom he accused of interfering in the UNM affairs from the backstage.

Melia opened his separate office earlier this month.
