Gakharia offers negotiation to ruling Georgian Dream, UNM opposition

Ex PM Giorgi Gakharia offers open trilateral talks to theRuling party-Georgian Dream and United National Movement (UNM)-the biggest opposition party, with the aim to recruit members for city councils ‘in a balanced manner.’

Gakharia underlined on the briefing on October 7th, that his party has the opportunity to have an important say on issues such as choosing the chairman of city councils, because it has a high representation in the councils of Tbilisi and other big cities.

“With unfair methods, Georgian Dream tries to coerce council members from our party to join them”, said Gakharia.

Gakharia also claims that his party is not planning a coalition with neither the Georgian Dream nor the UNM-underlining the importance of negotiation in order to avoid one party councils.

The preliminary results of the local elections show that, Georgian Dream has lost the majority in several municipalities, such as Senaki and Batumi.

It will be essential to establish coalition to form a majority in most of these municipalities. However, the UNM will be able to form majority unilaterally in the municipality of Zugdigi.

Gakharia was the PM from Georgian Dream, until he resigned in February, due to internal disagreements. After leaving Georgian Dream, he established a new party and took part in the local elections on October 2nd.
